Milkweed and a 1/2 day

We pulled milkweed from this fields this morning. The milkweed variety that we were pulling is contains a toxin, which means the when the cows graze in the field, they pick around it. Once they have mowed most of the field, the milkweed is able to bolt and take over the field. So our job was to remove as much of this invasive species as possible to keep it from taking over the field. The first field we weeded was the one at the foot of “field 2” near all the vegetable beds. It was pretty easy since the the grass around it was pretty short and the task took us about 2 hours. then we moved on the field 3, where the cows were. This grass was tall, about shoulder height. We would walk through the grass and find patches of milkweed to rip out and pile up. When we had big enough piles, we would carry them over to the wheel barrow. We did this until lunch.

After lunch, Ellie, Angela, Aizhan, and I decided to go out. Ellie drove us in her car to French Mountain. French Mountain is in Rome, Maine, about twenty minutes from our farm. We did the short but steep, and beautiful hike up to the top, talking a little on the way. The top had such good views; Maine is incredibly beautiful! We hiked down to the bottom after a quick chat with people from Massachusetts.

Then we headed down to Farmington for some errands. First we stopped into Java Joe’s Corner Cafe for coffee and a treat. I had a cappuccino and a cookie that were both surprisingly good. We all sat down and got to know each other a little better. Then we popped into Twice Sold Tales, a bookstore across the streets. Ellie purchased How We Decide for everyone to read, sort of a like a little book club. Most of us wwoofers are in some sort of transitional period in their lives which makes the book very fitting. Then we went to Reny’s, a maine based mini department store. We all bought $3.33 t-shirts and most everyone bought candy or snacks. We had so much fun there, it was incredible.

Our host’s figured out that saying grace as soon as everyone was lined up for dinner was the easiest way to get everyone to say grace (since there is family in town.) We had a pasta casserole and salad.

Then us wwoofers (Ellie, Aizhan, Angela, J and I) went upstairs to Ellie and Aizhan’s room (the sewing room) and had a chat. A and J had moved into the downstairs room, but are still wwoofing. We had a ton of fun watching youtube videos and talking.
