Gardening, what an honor

new rowsThis morning, Aizhan and I were tasked with setting up and completing the last two brussel sprout rows. We laid out the plastic together, then I cut the plastic on offset 18 inch spacing while she hoed the other bed. Then we did a repeat with the second one. While I cut holes for the brussel sprouts, Aizhan took the seedlings and threw them at the rows in the first bed. Then I followed behind her and planted the plants.

Once we finished with the brussel sprouts, we moved on to setting up 2 beds of broccoli. newbroccoliThese beds were spaced differently. The outer aisle were set at 2 feet and the beds were 2 1/2 feet wide, but the center aisle was only 1 foot. This bed only needed a little raking to make the ground level. We staked the spacing, then tied the lines to the stakes and carefully walked them across the 60 foot beds. There, we tied the strings to the corresponding sides, and had two marked rows. Then we laid a tape measure and Aizhan dropped a broccoli seedling every one foot, and then one between that on the other side. I followed behind her, planting the plants.

asparegus hayThen we moved on to haying the asparagus. We laid a thick layer of hay between the rows of asparagus to help keep the weeds down. Considering that this is bed of asparagus is going to be here for the next 15-30 years, it makes sense to give it a good start.

Once we finished that, we started pruning tomatoes. There were only about 30 minutes left before lunch, so we didn’t get too much done. I did a little less than half a row. Angela has been working on the drywall stilts to lower the tomatoes. The tomato plants have been grown up a long cord, and they can be lowered and recliped, giving them more room to grow and therefore a longer productive life. It’s so cool to see here up there working. She is totally a natural at it, she doesn’t even need to hold on to the greenhouse structure half the time.

Lunchtime was weird. I kept having conversations with people that made me really uncomfortable. I need to deal with my anxiety and stop putting my foot in my mouth.

After lunch, the other wwoofers went back to the greenhouse to continue their pruning and tomato lowering. lauras house garden

I given the honor of working in the Farm Mother’s garden. I was so excited because her garden resembles what I would like to do in my own garden one day. First weeded and prepared an area so that I could plant two small rows of cauliflower and parsley. Then I spent the rest of my time working on weeding  and planting flowers in the light showers throughout the afternoon.

Dinner went well, and I had a nice long chat with Joshua; I miss him so much tonight.
