We harvested spinach by hand most of the morning. At around 9am, Jo came to Ellie and I told us that he was planning to put us in charge of tending to the chickens and the pigs on Saturday morning, because he was going to be at an event off the farm. So he took us to the chicken coops and showed us what to do.
First thing in the morning, we go through the electric fence into the coop and fill the water and food for all three coops. To change the water, we need to put a cap on the bottom of the waterer, and then open the top. We can then fill the waterer. After filling, we need to tighten the lid to a good hand tighten to keep the water from flowing out too freely. Then the cap is removed from the bottom. As for food, we just need to fill little troughs. Later in the morning, we are to go out to the coop, check the food and collect the eggs. We should check on then one more time around lunch time. Every time we check on the chickens, we should check on the pigs too. They need 3-4 large scoops of feed and fresh water.
After collecting the eggs, we can bring them in and wash them. They are washed by
putting on a pair of black gloves and gently scrubbing them under warm water, and they are separated in needed (they may not be of salable quality, but we can eat them here on the farm.) After they dry, they are boxed in dozens and prepared for the retail pickup orders. Jo showed us all of these tasks and let us know that he would be showing us these tasks again to make sure we have it down before he goes.
After lunch we weeded spinach and then ripped out a bed of greens. The afternoon got really hot so we decided to go for a swim after work. A, J, and I went for a swim while Angela, Ellie and Aizhan went for a run. After their run, they joined us in the lake along with some of the visiting family from out of town. It was so sweet to see the couple, about my parents age, rowing a cannon to the island.
After dinner, Ellie, Angela, and I went to the drug store. Then we went to the ice cream shop. It was a good time!
