Wood, family and the lake

This morning, we picked chard and kale for the customer orders for tomorrow. The farm family will be going to an event tomorrow so we wanted to get everything prepared today rather than saturday morning like we usually do.

Ellie and I did a lot of the animal care throughout the morning; I feel like this is the best possible job! I love it!

In between, Aizhan and I stacked firewood with one of the farm sons who lives in another state. He could throw those logs at a rate I’d never seen before. He was like a clay pigeon shooter with logs. Once Aizhan and I were finished, we went out and hoed a little while. Lunch was being served early, so we headed in early.

While everyone else was having lunch, I took a shower and prepared for an afternoon out with Lisa, my sister-in-law. We had a great lunch and a fabulous time in Farmington! I’m so happy we got to spend the afternoon together.

She dropped me back off at the farm right as the cow was being taken to the barn for milking, meaning around quarter to four. I went up to my room and watched youtube videos about farming, and then took a short nap. The other wwoofers got home from their strenuous hike shortly before dinner.

During dinner, the head farmer mentioned that he was thinking of finishing some of the orders before getting ready to leave tomorrow morning (at 7am.) I asked him if he’s like some help preparing or picking in the morning, which got the other wwoofers onboard to help too. So we all went out to the greenhouse and picked tomatoes together, then bagged them up and put them out for the customers.

As I was walking out of the box room, I saw that Angela, Aizhan and the Head Farmer were throwing around a football, so I joined them. Eventually Ellie joined us as well.

The Head Farmer recommended going out onto the lake to watch the sunset, so the four of us decided to go out in the canoe. Aizhan swam to the island like a boss, using the freestyle stroke almost the entire way.  Meanwhile Angela and Ellie rowed the canoe. I sat in the canoe and relaxed. When we got to the island, Angela docked the boat perfectly near the rocks so that Aizhan could get on. Then we rowed around several other islands, enjoying the gorgeous sunset on the lake.
