Last full day on the farm

Today, Thursday July 21 was my last full day on the farm. Last night, after dinner, the Head Farmer asked if we could work early to get the orders ready by 9am. Angela, Aizhan, Ellie, A, J, and I all got up and ready for our 6am early morning call to work. We picked cherry tomatoes for the first hour, and while Angela packaged tomatoes, A and J pick broccoli while Ellie and the Head Farmer packaged greens, and Aizhan and I chopped wood. then we stacked the wood, finishing the wood pile. It was such a great feeling to have that completed.

Because of the early start, the Head Farmer gave us the rest of the afternoon off, but I wanted to get the next batch of green beans planted. I went out the the Farm Mother’s garden with 90 hydrated green beans and planted them 4″ apart in the two 15 foot rows. It was nice to wrap up the projects in the Farm Mother’s garden.

Afterward, the Farm Mother and I sat in the cool, private basement and she taught me some stress relief and anti-anxiety tricks. I’m really looking forward to trying them in real life.

In the early afternoon Angela, Ellie, A, and I went to Farmington to get ice cream one last time. Ellie “interviewed” me about my experience, asking me all sorts of questions about my time here.  It was then that started to realize that I was leaving the next day and would not be seeing these people again after Friday morning (at least not together.)

We came back to the house and had a lazy afternoon. We went had a great conversation at dinner, and later sat on the front steps to the farmhouse together drinking tea. Angela asked the Head Farmer to take some pictures of us together. We then went inside and discussed the politics around farms in the US and went to bed.
